Why Kbamboo Is Temporarily Pausing EU Deliveries

When I started Kbamboo, I wanted to create beautiful products that were better for people and better for the environment. Sustainability has always been an important part of the decisions I make, from our bamboo bed linen to the packaging we use.

So, I wanted to personally explain why we have made the difficult decision to temporarily pause deliveries to EU countries.

It’s not because of our packaging

Our packaging is already made using recycled and more sustainable materials, and we continually look at ways to reduce unnecessary packaging and make better choices.

The challenge we’re facing is the new EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) and the additional responsibilities it brings for businesses selling packaged products into European markets.

While I completely support the aim of reducing packaging waste and improving recycling, understanding and complying with the requirements as a small Irish business is proving quite complicated.

The cost of selling across Europe

Depending on the country, businesses can be required to register with packaging producer-responsibility schemes, report packaging volumes and pay associated fees.

Importantly, these aren’t necessarily one-off costs. There can be ongoing annual fees and administration to maintain compliance.

For a large international company, this may be relatively straightforward. For a small independent Irish business like Kbamboo, selling smaller volumes into individual European countries, the costs can become significant.

I’ve had to ask myself whether it makes sense to maintain multiple registrations and annual compliance costs when sales in some markets are very small.

Why I’ve chosen to pause

I could simply absorb the additional costs, but ultimately they would have to be reflected somewhere — through higher product prices, higher shipping costs or reduced investment in other areas of Kbamboo.

I don’t want to make that decision without first properly understanding the regulations and finding a sensible way forward.

Most importantly, I don’t want to take shortcuts when it comes to compliance or sustainability.

So, for now, I’m pressing pause while I work through the requirements and look for the right solution for Kbamboo.

This isn’t goodbye

To our European customers, please know that this is a pause, not a goodbye.

I am incredibly grateful to everyone who has supported Kbamboo across Europe, and I hope we can reopen EU deliveries once we have a clearer and more sustainable way forward.

Sometimes running a small business means knowing when to stop, take a breath and work things out properly.

That’s exactly what I’m doing.
