According to Phys.org, an average person sleeps for one-third of their life. Because of sleep, about 318 months in an average person’s life is spent lying in bed. With this in mind one of the most important decisions we will make is choosing the right bed.

What to keep in mind when choosing a new bed?

  1. Bed frame or divan?- both have their advantages and disadvantages. Divan beds are the exact size of the mattress so a double divan will be 135cm x 190cm the same size as the mattress but the bed frame will be wider and longer depending on the bed frame. So measuring the space in your room and the height of the bed frame or divan (can be customised) is very important !! Nobody wants to be the princess and the pea!!
  2. Mattress – this choice is bit more tricky. When choosing a mattress you have to physically lie on the mattress in a showroom, this is important because choosing a mattress is very subjective. What you think is firm someone else may describe as soft, or you might think you want firm( too firm may lead to pressure pain) but actually you would prefer medium firm. Secondly you need to consider the make up of the mattress ie pocket sprung (ideal for less movement), foam only no springs or coil spring, memory foam, latex or a blend of foams, the dept of the mattress especially if you are choosing a very low or very high bed frame.
  3. Fabric, wood or metal frame?– this decision is probably more design driven depending on the space, colours or mood you want to create. But if you choose a platform divan bed this will give you mattress a firmer feel whereas lats, sprung lats and metal frames will give you mattress a different feel. Important to keep in mind some mattresses are designed for specific  divans so be sure to ask the question , Is this mattress suitable for the divan or frame you choose.
  4.  Do your research when it comes to the mattress , don’t buy your bed frame or divan and put any mattress in it because you like the look. Invest in your sleep environment and comfort it will pay you dividends when you feel fresh and rested in the morning. Simply look at the cost over 8-10 years which is the life span of most mattresses it will be worth it!!
  5. Invest in good quality bed linen and pillows-there is no point buying an amazing bed and mattress and using old pillows or bed linen.Treat yourself, it will complete the overall look.

Avoid common mistakes made when changing your bed and mattress.

1 .Meaures the room and the bed properly …don’t guess. Most furniture shops have a re stocking charge of up to 20% so you will be out of pocket.

2.Choose neutral colours and add colour in you throws, cushions , and paint on wall. Trends change and replacing a few cushions, throws or paint won’t break the bank.

3. Keep in mind fabric beds if you suffer from allergies, wood is probably a better option in this case.

4.Bring your partner with you to choose the mattress, even if you go a few days before and narrow it down to 3 that you really like. After lying on all mattress try and narrow it down to two, go for a cup of coffee and come back and see which one you prefer. Sometimes if you lie on too many mattresses for too long they all feel the same, so a well earned break will hopefully help you make the final decision.

5. Never buy your mattress online, without lying on it first because it very subjective.

6. Don’t rush, take you time with this decision you will be sleeping in it for the next 8-10 years.
